Bleaching (Teeth Whitening)

Teeth change color in time because of what we eat and drink. Particularly, color change is faster in individuals who smoke and consume colored drinks such as tea and coke. Bleaching is a cosmetic solution that ensures whitening of teeth, which had changed color because of varying reasons, one or two tones.

Why do the Teeth Become Colored?

  • Consuming some foods and drinks including coffee, tea, red wine, curry, soy, fruit juices, and similar,
  • Smoking,
  • As a result of damages or traumas or as one of the results of natural aging,
  • Staining in gray-black color is possible in teeth that had been filled with amalgam (gray) filling, which was used commonly in the past, because of leaking of copper and corrosion products into the dentin canals in the tooth.
  • As a result of poorly performed root canal treatment,
  • Staining of teeth is possible because of antibiotic intake r.

There are two types of bleaching:

1) Clinical type (Office bleaching)

2) Home type (home bleaching)

OFFICE BLEACHING

This bleaching is applied in the clinic. Your dentist will examine you in the first place and will inform you about the type of bleaching and the number of visits required. Office bleaching will take about an hour that is applied by the dentist in the clinic. Dentist will apply the bleaching gel in the first place. This gel will be allowed in place for a certain period of time after irradiation with laser. It will take less time as it is applied under the control of the dentist.

HOME TYPE BLEACHING

Plastic plaques will be prepared based on the measures taken by the dentist on the patient. The bleaching gel that suits the patient and its dosage will be determined and the patient will be informed. The patient will place the bleaching gel within the plaques at home with intervals (2 to 8 hours) indicated to him/her. This application will be made during night hours because this will be more practical. This application can be continued for 7 to 15 days till the required tone it achieved. The amount of gel is very important in this type of application. Using too much gel will result in overflow of the gel out of the plaque and irritation of gums.

Precautions for the period following bleaching:

  • More or less sensitivity will be seen in all the patients in general after bleaching (no sensitivity is seen very rarely). Such sensitivity is temporary, and will disappear within 1 to 3 days. Analgesics can be used particularly at day 1.
  • Too hot or too cold foods and drinks must be avoided for the first few days.
  • Smoking and products containing dork-colored stains such as tea, coffee, chocolate, red wine, sour cherries, caramel or tomato paste must not be consumed for 1 week following the procedure. Otherwise, the whiteness achieved will disappear.
  • If you brush your teeth at least twice a day, make your control visits every 6 months regularly, do not smoke and avoid consuming excessive amounts of tea and coffee, bleaching will continue to be effective for a long time.
  • Bleaching effects differ from one individual to another. Habits of eating, drinking, smoking and alcohol play an important role in this effect. Period of the effect can range between 2 to 3 years.
